Chabot College does not offer a paramedic program. However, there are a number of paramedic programs in existence, and you are encouraged to do your own research to determine what program may be best for you, if any at all. Many fire departments require applicants to possess current Paramedic licensure, and some even require at least one (1) year of field experience working as a field Paramedic running 9-1-1 calls.
Requirements to get into paramedic programs can vary by program, but applicants are strongly encouraged to have at least one (1) year of field experience working as an EMT in a fairly busy system running 9-1-1 calls.
Many fire departments require an indvidual to have current paramedic licensure and possibly even at least one year of experience working as a field paramedic running 9-1-1 calls, to even apply for Firefighter/Paramedic positions.
Please do everyone a favor and do not go to paramedic school just to become a Firefighter as your chances for success with such an attitude will be reduced. Become a paramedic because you really want to, and because you don't mind serving as a paramedic for a significant portion of your career should you be hired as a Firefighter/Paramedic. Many fire departments that hire paramedics require the individual to keep their paramedic license for a minimum time frame (such as 5 or 10 years, or until you promote to Engineer or Captain). Become a paramedic because you truly enjoy what you will be doing, as mundane and routine, not to mention as challenging as it can be at times. For some, paramedic school is tougher than a 4-year degree program, and it is not uncommon for many to fail out of paramedic school due to the challenging requirements and coursework.
