FREE ONLINE TRAINING - UL FIREFIGHTER SAFETY RESEARCH INSTITUTE:
One of the hottest topics in today's modern fire service is that of modern fire behavior and how it relates to building construction and our strategy and tactics used to fight a structure fire today, as opposed to 20 years ago. Underwriters Laboratories Fire Safety Research Institute has created a number of FREE online training classes that are a must-watch for anyone in the fire service, or desiring a career in the fire service. The techniques used by your father or your grandfather to fight a fire in their day may no longer be acceptable or safe. Do your own research to come to your own conclusion.
Additionally, a new acronym titled "SLICERS" has been developed to modernize our firefighting tactics:
S - Size-up
L - Location of the fire
I - Isolate the flwo path
C - Cool from a safe distance
E - Extinguish the fire
R - Rescue as needed
S - Salvage as needed
For more info on SLICERS, CLICK HERE.
NOTE: This subject is one that is easily dismissed by some traditionalists who still choose to disregard the science. Everyone is entitled to their opinion, but Firefighters are getting killed and injured for continuing to fight fire "old school" in certain situations that call for "new school" tactics as discussed in the online classes above. Do your own research to make your own opinion.
FREE - NATIONAL INCIDENT MANAGEMENT SYSTEM (NIMS) CERTIFIED CLASSES:
Want to add some FREE certifications to your resume, while also learning more about what you'll be expected to know upon entering your career in the fire service? If so, go to the FEMA website to take a number of NIMS certified classes such as IS-100.b, IS-200.b, IS-700.a and IS-800.b, all of which are typically required of fire academy students.
