FIRE TECHNOLOGY (FT)
FIRE 50 - Fire Protection Organization (3 units)
Introduction to fire protection; career opportunities in fire protection and related fields; philosophy and history of fire protection; fire loss analysis; organization and function of public and private fire protection services; fire departments as part of local government; laws and regulations affecting the fire service; fire service nomenclature; specific fire protection functions; basic fire chemistry and physics; introduction to fire protection systems, introduction to fire strategy and tactics. Cultural diversity including discrimination and harassment laws and regulations. 3 hours per week lecture, plus a total of 12 hours laboratory for the semester. Transfer: CSU.
FIRE 51 - Fire Service Operations (3 units)
Fundamentals of fire department organization, management and resources; fire company organization; resources to control various emergencies; multi-agency coordinating systems; support and regulatory agencies; strategy and tactics applied to structural firefighting; wildland firefighting and hazardous material emergencies; and safety conditions to be considered. 3 hours per week lecture, plus a total of 12 hours laboratory for the semester. Transfer: CSU.
FIRE 52 - Firefighter Safety and Public Education (3 units)
Assessing fire dangers and handling common fire situations in the home and in the work place; risk abatement and personal preparation for unforeseen fire emergencies; roles and responsibilities educating the public on fire safety. 3 hours.
FIRE 53 - Fire Behavior and Combustion (3 units)
Theory and fundamentals of why fires start, spread, and are controlled. An in depth study of fire chemistry and physics; fire characteristics of materials, extinguishing agents, and fire control techniques.
FIRE 54 - Fire Prevention Technology (3 units)
Provides fundamental information regarding the history and philosophy of fire prevention, organization and operation of a fire prevention bureau, use of fire codes, identification and correction of fire hazards, and the relationship of fire prevention with built-in fire protection systems, fire investigation and fire safety education. Provides skills necessary for California Fire Service Training and Education System, Certified Firefighter 1, and Fire Inspector 1. Transfer: CSU.
FIRE 55 - Fire Protection Equipment and Systems (3 units)
History and development of the Uniform Fire Code; features, design, and operations of fire alarm systems and smoke detection systems; means and adequacy of required exiting systems. Installation and maintenance of automatic, manual, and other private fire-extinguishing equipment, heat and smoke control systems, water or sprinkler supply for fire protection and portable fire extinguishers. Transfer: CSU.
FIRE 56 - Building Construction for Fire Protection (3 units)
This course is the study of the components of building construction that relate to fire/life safety. The elements of construction and design of structures are shown to be key factors when inspecting buildings, preplanning fire operations, and operating at fires/collapse emergencies. The development and evolution of building and fire codes will be studied in relationship to past fires/collapses in residential, commercial, and industrial occupancies. 3 hours. Transfer: CSU.
FIRE 64A - Hazardous Materials I (2 units)
Storage, handling laws, standards, and firefighting practices pertaining to hazardous solids, liquids, and gases. Includes review of chemistry of hazardous materials. Prerequisite: Fire Technology 50. 2 hours. Transfer: CSU.
FIRE 64B - Hazardous Materials II (2 units)
Knowledge of organic and inorganic materials, proper techniques to safeguard personnel and public. Emphasis on radioactive hazards. Prerequisite: Fire Technology 64A. 2 hours. Transfer: CSU.
FIRE 70A - Basic Rescue Practices (2 units)
Fire incident search and evacuation principles. Implementation of auto incident safety, access, first aid, extrication and removal operations. Wildland incident search procedures, knot tying and slope evacuation skills. Simulated automobile incident rescue exercises. Strongly recommended: Fire Technology 90A, 90B, and 90C (Firefighter 1 Academy) or active member of paid or volunteer fire department. 2 hours. Transfer: CSU.
FIRE 70B - Advanced Rescue Practices (2 units)
Continuation of skills and knowledge from Fire Technology 70A. Application of triage principles. Implementation of multi-casualty incident safety, access, first aid, extrication and removal operations. Advanced wildland incident vertical slope lowering and hoisting skills. Structure collapse shoring, debris tunneling and trench collapse patient recovery techniques. Includes simulated structure collapse rescue and incident command exercises. Prerequisite: Fire Technology 70A. 1 hour lecture, 3 hours laboratory. Transfer: CSU.
FIRE 71A - Fire Command 1A (2 units)
Provides fire company officers with information and experience in command and control techniques. Emphasis on decision making, the act of commanding, the authority of command. Satisfies part of the requirements for the State Fire Officer Certification. 40 total hours. Transfer: CSU.
FIRE 71B - Fire Command 1B (2 units)
Provides company officers with information and experience in command and control techniques. Emphasis on decision making and appropriate use of resources for the first arriving company officer at hazardous materials incidents. Satisfies part of the requirements for the State Fire Officer Certification. 40 total hours. Transfer: CSU.
FIRE 72 - Fire Management 1 (2 units)
Development of skills and knowledge necessary to make the transition from a specialist or supervisorial role to a managerial role. Preparation for State Fire Officer Certification. 40 total hours. Transfer: CSU.
FIRE 73A - Fire Prevention 1A (2 units)
Principles of fire prevention. Preparation for Fire Prevention Officer I and Fire Officer Certification. 40 total hours. Transfer: CSU.
FIRE 73B - Fire Prevention 1B (2 units)
Private fire protection systems; code requirements for access and egress; life safety factors. Preparation for Fire Prevention I and Fire Officer Certification. 40 total hours. Transfer: CSU.
FIRE 74 - Fire Investigation 1A (2 units)
Application of fire investigation techniques relating to different fires. Preparation for Fire Investigator I and Fire Officer Certification. 40 total hours. Transfer: CSU.
FIRE 75A - Fire Instructor 1A (2 units)
Methods and techniques to help fire service personnel select, develop, and organize materials for in-service programs. Designed for fire company officers who conduct in-service training programs. Prerequisite: Fire Technology 50 or employment in the Fire Service or related field. 32 total hours lecture, 8 total hours demonstration lab. 40 total hours. Transfer: CSU.
FIRE 75B - Fire Instructor 1B (2 units)
A continuation of Fire Service Technology 75A. Practice in the development, implementation, and evaluation of in service training programs. Prerequisite: Fire Technology 75A. 32 total hours lecture, 8 total hours demonstration lab. 40 total hours. Transfer: CSU.
FIRE 89 - Firefighter 1 Academy Introduction (0.5 units)

FIRE 90A - Firefighter 1 Certification Preparation - Firefighter 1 Academy (2 units)
Development of individual skills and basic knowledge necessary to perform the functions of a firefighter. Practice in donning breathing apparatus, knot tying, placing ladders, pulling hose, making water supply connections and using the incident command system. Prerequisites: Fire Technology 50, 51, 52 and 89; Health 81 or proof of current completion of an Emergency Medical Technician Program from another institution. (All courses completed with a grade of "C" or higher; Fire Technology 89 completed with CR before student may register for 90A.). 24 total hours lecture, 40 total hours laboratory.

FIRE 90B - Firefighter 1 Certification Preparation - Firefighter 1 Academy (2 units)
Continuation of skills and basic knowledge necessary to perform the function of a firefighter, engineer and captain within a fire attack team. Practice in donning breathing apparatus, knot tying, placing ladders, pulling hose, making water supply connections and using the incident command system. Prerequisite: Fire Technology 90A (completed with a grade of "C" or better). 24 total hours lecture, 40 total hours laboratory. Transfer: CSU.

FIRE 90C - Firefighter 1 Certification Preparation - Firefighter 1 Academy (2 units)
Continuation of skills and basic knowledge necessary to perform the functions of a fire attack team, in multiple company exercises, which include: hose and ladder evolutions; salvage and overhaul techniques; fire attack, control and extinguishment techniques for various situations. Firefighter 1 Academy Completion Certificate awarded upon successful completion. Prerequisite: Fire Technology 90B (completed with a grade of "C" or better). 24 total hours lecture, 40 total hours laboratory. Transfer: CSU.

FIRE 91A - Wildland Firefighter 1 (Basic) (3 units)
Provides a basic wildland firefighter course oriented toward entry-level employment opportunities within agencies responsible for wildland fire mitigation and interface I-Zone protection, with emphasis on the equipment utilized on CAL FIRE engines. The course is structured with a maximum emphasis on demonstration, student application and performance examinations. Fundamentals of wildland fire control and techniques of controlling other emergency incidents are covered with a strong safety perspective. A live fire exercise is provided for application of fire control and suppression techniques. Provides S130, S131 and S190 equivalency under National Wildfire Coordinating Group (NWCG) and meets Cal Fire 69 hour wildland firefighter 1 basic certification requirements. Course complies with the State Board of Fire Services Willdand Firefighting requirements for State Firefighter 1 Certification. Prerequisite: Fire Technology 90C or successful completion of a California Accredited Firefighter 1 Academy. Formerly known as Fire Technology 86. Transfer: CSU.
FIRE 91B - Hazardous Materials First Responder: Operational Level (1.5 units)
Hazard recognition and identification; incident response safety procedures. Response to hazardous materials emergencies. Emphasis on skills and knowledge necessary to protect lives, property, and the environment. Meets the California Specialized Training Institute's requirements for Hazardous Materials First Responder Certification under California Government Code Section 1503. Course complies with State Board of Fire Services requirements (1999). Formerly known as a portion of Fire Technology 65 - the other portion is now known as Fire Technology 91C. Transfer: CSU.
FIRE 91C - Incident Command System (ICS) 200: Basic ICS (1.5 units)
Hazard recognition and identification; incident response safety procedures. Principles of Incident Command System (ICS-200), basic ICS structure, and common responsibilities. Course complies with State Board of Fire Services requirements (1999). Formerly known as a portion of Fire Technology 65 - the other portion is now known as Fire Technology 91B.Transfer: CSU.
FIRE 95 - Work Experience (1 to 3 units) - May be repeated three times
College supervised on-the-job training while working in a fire service related occupation. Prerequisite: Firefighter 1 Academy Completion Certificate, current EMT certification. Corequisite: Fire Technology 96. 5 to 15 hours each week.

FIRE 96 - Work Experience Seminar (1 unit) - May be repeated three times
Coordination of curriculum with college supervised part-time or full-time employment, or volunteer work in the fire service field. Includes case studies, job related problems, cases and presentation, and material related to employment, organization and management; emphasis on building working relationships with supervisors, subordinates, and co-workers. Prerequisite: Firefighter 1 Academy Completion Certificate, current EMT certification. Corequisite: Fire Technology 95.

HEALTH
HEALTH 61 - Emergency Response (2.5 units)
Development of knowledge and skills necessary for recognizing and caring for emergency situations, including cardiopulmonary resuscitation, prevention of disease transmission and automated external defibrillation. Designed for first responders in an emergency. Successful completion of the knowledge and skills test qualifies for an American Red Cross Emergency Response card and a Basic Life Support Provider CPR card (CPR for the Professional Rescuer). 2 hours lecture, 2 hours laboratory.
HEALTH 81 - Emergency Medical Technician (EMT): Basic (6.5 units)
Provides training in the foundation skills and knowledge required of the EMT-1 scope of practice. The EMT-1 certification is the minimum requirement for ambulance attendants and most entry-level firefighter positions. EMT-1 certification is also required for entry into paramedic training. This training program is accredited by the Alameda County Emergency Medical Services Agency. Prerequisite: Health 61 (completed with a grade of "C" or better). 5 hours lecture, 4.5 hours laboratory. Corequisite: Health 83.

HEALTH 83 - Patient Stabilization, Extrication, and Triage (0.5 units)
Patient stabilization techniques to include safe patient extrication from a simulated motor vehicle accident. Includes triage for multi-casualty incident/disaster management. Corequisite: Health 81. 3 total hours lecture, 4 total hours laboratory.

HEALTH 85 - EMT Refresher (1.5 units)
Provides a refresher in the foundation skills and knowledge required of the EMT-1 scope of practice. This refresher program is accredited by the Alameda County EMS Agency. 24 hours total of instruction. Prerequisite: EMT certification that is not expired for more than four (4) years. The EMT refresher course is offered once in the fall semester and once in the spring semester.
